Dog Lover's Day | Adventure Landing | March 12, 2011
Dog Lover’s Day

GREAT participated in the dog adoption fair at Dog Lover’s Day in March. We spent a wonderful day making new friends, catching up with GREAT friends and enjoying the festivities including frisbee dog shows, relay races, games, a bouncey house and pet food drive.

GoldenFest | Dog Wood Park | April 2011

Another successful GoldenFest has come and gone. All the Goldens had a GREAT time spending a sunny April day at Dog Wood Park. Tennis balls, doggie pools and contests kept the pups busy while the humans had fun watching their antics and bidding on the wonderful auction items. GoldenFest 2011 generated over $4,500 that will be used to rescue more Goldens. Thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s event a huge success.

Trail of Tails | The Landing | May 2011
Trail of Tails

GREAT attended the Jacksonville Humane Society’s Trail of Tails in May. It was a wonderful day spent with lots of dog lovers and even more dogs. The fun walk began at The Landing and showcased Jacksonville landmarks and natural treasures. After the walk, everyone returned to The Landing to enjoy a festival of food and fun, including dock-diving dogs and live music. This was a GREAT opportunity for us to meet new Golden lovers and say hello to some familiar faces.

Update on Titus

For those of you following the long journey of recovery for Titus, we wanted to share his remarkable progress. Titus was rescued from the bowels of the city 6 months ago, emaciated, deaf, hairless, diseased, ear that had been half bitten off and pieces of skin hanging from him. GREAT took him in, started a fund in his behalf for his long-term medical needs, found a wonderful foster for him and started his treatment at Greenbriar Animal Hospital. Titus now weighs 65 pounds and his fur has grown back in most places. His wonderful foster mom has him potty trained, he has been neutered and now that he is healthier, is undergoing heart worm treatment. He has a way to go yet but he certainly has come a long way!

To date, more than $1,300 has been raised to help with the medical care of Titus, but additional funds will be needed to continue his treatment. If you would like to contribute to Titus’ rehabilitation, please make a donation via Paypal or send a check to G.R.E.A.T. Rescue, P.O. Box 600878, Jacksonville, FL 32260-0878. As with all GREAT donations they are tax deductible as a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization.

Summertime Safety Tips

Summertime is many people’s favorite time of year. Lazy days spent outside enjoying the sunshine and fun outdoor activities are a welcome change from cold days spent inside, but for our canine friends summertime requires some precautions:

Avoid strenuous exercise on extremely hot days

Take walks in the early mornings or evenings, when the sun’s heat is less intense

Avoid prolonged exposure to hot asphalt or sand, which can burn your dog’s paws

If your dog is outside on a hot day, make sure he has a shady spot to rest in – dog houses are not good shelter during the summer as they can trap heat

Keep dogs off of lawns that have been chemically treated or fertilized for 24 hours (or according to package instructions), and away from potentially toxic plants and flowers

Never, ever leave a dog unattended in a vehicle in the summer months – heatstroke and death can occur within minutes in warm temperatures.

Goodbye GREAT Friend
We said goodbye to our dear friend Van Ochs earlier this month. Van and his wife Sylvia have been dear friends to GREAT over the last four years. They have provided a loving foster home to many Goldens and have adopted two GREAT dogs. Their love and generosity for Goldens in need has been limitless. We will truely miss Van and the warmth and kindness he brought to friends, both two legged and 4 legged.
