About Us

As G.R.E.A.T. approaches the beginning of our third decade of rescue, we are totally amazed and in awe of the tremendous progress and success that G.R.E.A.T. Rescue of NE Florida, Inc. has enjoyed over the past 20 years. Our president, Judi Brown, can’t remember a time when she didn’t have a dog to smooch and hug, but it wasn’t until she adopted their first Golden Retriever, Rhonda, in 1975 that she fully realized the total joy and love this amazing breed can provide. As time marched on, she added to her Golden family; her professional career was winding down and she began to plan for her “days of leisure” ahead.

Combining Judi’s love of Goldens and her experience in non-profit, she investigated the possibility of beginning a Golden Retriever Rescue in NE Florida since there were none located here. After many phone calls, emails and just plain charging forward, G.R.E.A.T. (Golden Retriever Emergency Assistance Team) was born. Their beautiful Golden Retrievers, Katie and her daughter Brooke were the inspiration and with their support and that of Judi’s husband, Reed, they began their journey into this wonderful world. As the years rolled on, many generous, caring and talented friends lent their time and expertise to this endeavor and to each of them, for the Goldens and Golden mixes already rescued, we owe a GREAT big thank you!!! This Rescue is not one person, but a dedicated team whose sole mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home Golden Retrievers.

Since 2000, GREAT Rescue has matched almost 1,100 wonderful Golden Retrievers with loving, responsible families. Based in the Jacksonville-St. Augustine area, GREAT is affiliated with the Golden Retriever National Rescue Committee, is a 501(c) (3) NOT FOR PROFIT organization, and a Best Friends Animal Society / No More Homeless Pets Network Partner.
